Larson Applauds Multi-State Lawsuit Challenging Costly Trump Tariffs
East Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement applauding Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and the multi-state coalition that filed a lawsuit in court challenging President Trump’s costly tariffs.
“President Trump’s tariffs have continued to create instability and chaos across the economy, making life more expensive for everyday Americans,” said Larson. “At the same time that he and his Republican allies in Congress are trying to pass a new tax break for the wealthy, these tariffs are a tax increase on consumers. The latest estimate shows they could raise costs for the average household by $4,900 per year. The Constitution is clear that it is Congress, not the President, who has the power to impose tariffs. I applaud Attorney General Tong and the multi-state coalition for standing up in court to this abuse of power. No president should be able to unilaterally raise costs on hard-working families.”
Estimates from the Budget Lab at Yale University predict that President Trump’s tariffs could cost the average household an additional $4,900 annually. Rep. Larson introduced the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act with Reps. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Don Beyer (VA-08) toblock presidents from unilaterally abusing emergency powers to raise prices for working families. He also introduced legislation with every Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee that would require Congress to vote before new tariffs can go into effect.
