Larson Applauds Court Decision Overturning Trump Tariff Regime
East Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01), a member of the House Trade Subcommittee, released the following statement after a U.S. Appeals Court found that most of President Trump’s tariffs were illegally imposed on American consumers. The case may be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
“As Republicans in the House and Senate continue to look away from what they know is wrong, I commend our state’s Attorney General, William Tong,” said Larson. “He has taken on President Trump over his costly tariffs that are making life more expensive - and he won - twice. The Constitution is clear: It is Congress, not the President, with the power to enact tariffs. We will be back in session next week. If my Republican colleagues are serious about lowering costs for hard-working families, they should join Democrats now to end this tax on American consumers and prevent any future president from abusing their powers to raise prices like this.”
Rep. Larson introduced the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act with Reps. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Don Beyer (VA-08) to block presidents from unilaterally abusing emergency powers to raise prices for working families. He also introduced a bill with Rep. Linda Sanchez (CA-38) to suspend the President’s tariffs and require Congress to vote before new tariffs can go into effect. In July, Larson filed a brief with Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) at the U.S. Court of Appeals to challenge President Trump’s tariffs in this case.
