Larson Applauds $5.7 Billion F135 Contract for Pratt & Whitney
Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) applauded the announcement that Pratt & Whitney was awarded a $5.7 billion contract to produce over 332 F135 propulsion engines powering all three variants of the F-35 Lightning II aircraft. This award is the largest ever F135 contract.
“Pratt & Whitney and Connecticut's manufacturing base are the best in the world at producing high quality, reliable engines for our military. This announcement is proof of that. The F135 engine is a driving force behind our state’s manufacturing sector and plays a critical role in our nation’s long term military needs. This is great news for Connecticut’s economy, workforce, and for our nation’s military,” said Larson.
Larson serves as the co-chair of the Joint Strike Fighter Caucus. In 2011, Larson successfully worked to eliminate funding for the alternative engine for the F-35, which saved taxpayers upwards of $3 billion. This made Pratt & Whitney the sole supplier of the engine, securing Connecticut manufacturing jobs for duration of the 60-year life cycle of the program.
