LARSON ANNOUNCES FEDERAL GRANT FOR HARTFORD

WASHINGTON, D.C.- U.S. Congressman John B. Larson (CT-01) today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $1 million dollar grant for the design and construction of a child-care center on the site of the Hartford Job Corps Center, which is currently under construction. The childcare center will provide a comprehensive child development program for the children of the Job Corps students, as well as providing education, training, and skills that both parents and children can use in life.

"I know that Hartford has been waiting for this generous grant to come through, and I have to compliment Mayor Mike Peters and the City of Hartford for their tireless work on behalf of the City, especially in securing grants such as this one," said Larson. "Under their steady leadership and because of their foresight and hard work, Hartford is making great strides forward. The Job Corps Center that is currently under construction, and the childcare center that will be made possible, in part, because of this grant, will give an important helping hand to a number of at-risk young people in Hartford."

Job Corps is an education and job-training program for at-risk youth, ages 16 through 24. Beginning in 1964, the program has provided more than 1.7 million disadvantaged youth with academic, vocational, and social skills training designed to aid them in the prospects of future employment and continuing education. Job Corps is a partnership between companies, unions, state and federal government and employers that ensures that at-risk students can utilize training and job placement services.

The Hartford Job Corps Center is scheduled to open in the fall of 2002.
