Larson Announces $7.3 Million in COVID-19 Relief HUD Funding to Help Low-Income Americans

April 2, 2020

Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) announced Connecticut's First District will receive over $7.3 million in funding from the Department Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to help low-income Americans that was allocated from the CARES Act that Congress passed last week.

"Connecticut residents' lives have been upturned by the COVID-19 pandemic. The CARES Act, which I voted for last week, is an all-of-the-above package to provide relief for our communities. Today, it was announced by HUD, that First District cities and towns will be receiving over $7.3 million to help address housing needs during this pandemic, through funding made available from the CARES Act. I will continue to work with our local agencies to ensure we are doing everything we can to address the needs of Connecticut residents as we weather this crisis," said Larson.

The funding mechanisms are:

  • Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, which will allow cities to respond to the coronavirus with economic development projects and social safety net support, including investing in housing, childcare, community health facilities, and food banks.
  • Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) Funding, which will allow cities to address emergency housing issues arising from the coronavirus crisis, including the homeless population and at risk of homelessness population, as well as eviction prevention activities.
  • The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program, which ensures that low-income individuals living with AIDS/HIV are able to live in safe and secure housing. This funding will ensure that this program, which supports a population particularly vulnerable to Covid-19, is able to continue operating.
