Larson and Colleagues Honor Former President Jimmy Carter at U.S. Capitol Ceremony
Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) attended a lying in state ceremony with Vice President Kamala Harris and his colleagues in the U.S. Capitol to honor former President Jimmy Carter.
“Today, Members of Congress gathered to remember President Jimmy Carter as he lies in state at the U.S. Capitol – a Presidential honor recognized by Congress,” said Larson. “Jimmy Carter distinguished himself for his integrity as President of the United States and earned the nation’s admiration for his lifelong embodiment of public service. He led our nation with grace and dignity, promoted human rights across the globe, and worked to achieve peace in the Middle East.
“He continued his mission of public service as an elder statesman, demonstrating to the rest of us how you can make a difference in the world even decades after leaving elective office,” Larson continued. “Through their work at the Carter Center, President Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter touched countless lives and will be held up as an example of leadership for generations to come. They have promoted projects in 80 countries, continued his work to achieve peace in the Middle East, and led a global campaign to eradicate Guinea Worm disease, set to be the first illness ever eliminated without the use of vaccines or drugs.
“A man of deep faith and convictions, Jimmy Carter leaves behind an insurmountable legacy that extends far beyond the scope of the office he once held. My heart and thoughts are with Jack, Chip, Jeff, Amy, and the entire Carter family as they mourn this great loss,” Larson concluded.
The general public may view President Carter lying in state from January 7th-9th.
