Goodwin College Receives FederalFunding to Provide
Nursing School Scholarships toDisadvantaged Students
Hartford, CT-Today, U.S.Congressman John B. Larson (CT-01) announced Goodwin College will receive a$49,250 federal grant to provide academic scholarships for their nursingprogram to disadvantaged students. Goodwin College, founded in 1999, has thesecond largest nursing program in the state.
TheScholarships for Health Professions Students from Disadvantaged BackgroundsGrant Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and HumanServices, provides funding to health profession and nursing schools forscholarships to students in financial need, as well as students from racialminority groups.
"Connecticuthas one of the most severe nursing shortages in the country, threatening thequality of health care in our state. At the same time, studentsthroughout the state and my district are unable to pursue a higher educationdue to financial constraints. ," said Congressman Larson."This funding toGoodwin College, in addition to enhancing diversity in the health professionand aiding the state in solving its nursing crisis, will allow students,regardless of their economic background, the opportunity to gain an educationat one of our state's top nursing programs."
Accordingto the most up to date National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses conducted bythe U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, nurses from minoritybackgrounds represent approximately only 11% of the registered nurse workforce.
