Connecticut Delegation Demands Reversal to Proposed Trump Administration Rule Classifying Nursing Degrees as Non-Professional
Hartford, CT– Today, the Connecticut Congressional delegation sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education, demanding a reversal of the Trump Administration’s proposed student loan cuts which would exclude nursing from “professional” graduate-level degrees, cutting the available federal student loans to nursing students in half compared to “professional” degrees. The proposed rule is a result of cuts to federal student loans in President Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill (H.R. 1). The letter was submitted under a comment period for the Administration’s proposed rule.
“This is not the time, in the midst of a nursing crisis, to limit the student pipeline to these critical fields or leave prospective nurses vulnerable to the private student loan market. Nurses ensure the health and safety of millions and nurse faculty educate the next generation. As such, we urge the Department to revise its draft rule and classify post-baccalaureate nursing degrees under the definition of ‘professional degree,’” the Members wrote.
