More Democrats call for Noem impeachment

January 26, 2026

More Democrats are pushing for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following another fatal shooting by federal immigration authorities in Minneapolis.

“Kristi Noem and her department’s latest attempt to mislead the American public regarding the brutal and unjustified killing of Alex Pretti is deeply shameful, and she must be impeached and removed from office immediately,” Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) said in a Sunday statement.

Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who lived in Minneapolis, was fatally shot Saturday by a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent. The fatal shooting came a few weeks after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot Renee Good in the same city.

Both of the shootings have sparked massive backlash over President Trump’s immigration agenda, which is losing support even within Trump’s base.

In her own Sunday statement, Rep. Laura Gillen (D-N.Y.) said, “Another U.S. citizen has been killed at the hands of ICE and there must be accountability, which is why Secretary Noem must be impeached immediately.”

“Under her leadership, ICE has targeted U.S. citizens and children and killed Americans. She is not focused on safety or border security; she’s focused on chaos and self-promotion,” the New York Democrat added.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said Noem’s impeachment was among the “bare minimum” steps in response to the shootings.

“Voting NO on the DHS [Department of Homeland Security] funding bill is the bare minimum. Backing Kristi Noem’s impeachment is the bare minimum. Holding law-breaking ICE agents legally accountable is the bare minimum. ICE is beyond reform. Abolish it,” she wrote in a Sunday post on social platform X.

Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) wrote in a post on X that Noem has “baselessly” labelled Good a domestic terrorist after her shooting.

“Now, agents killed another resident on her watch. I don’t take impeachment lightly, but this moment demands action. Americans deserve leaders who put them above this authoritarian agenda,” he wrote.

The Democratic Party’s official account on X posted a push for Noem’s impeachment Sunday afternoon, reading “IMPEACH KRISTI NOEM.”

Earlier this month, Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) introduced articles of impeachment against Noem, pointing to the Homeland Security secretary’s work on the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

“Secretary Noem has brought her reign of terror to the Chicagoland area, LA, New Orleans, Charlotte, Durham, and communities north to south to east to west,” Kelly said during a press conference. “She needs to be held accountable for her actions.”

When reached for comment, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that, “DHS enforces the laws Congress passes, period.”

“If certain members don’t like those laws, changing them is literally their job,” she added.
