Connecticut lawmakers react to the fatal shooting in Minneapolis

January 24, 2026

A federal immigration officer fatally shot a man in Minneapolis on Saturday.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said a 37-year-old man was killed.

The man was identified by his parents as Alex Jeffrey Pretti. Pretti was an intensive care unit nurse.

The officer who shot Prett is an eight-year Border Patrol veteran, federal officials said.

The Minnesota National Guard has been activated by Gov. Tim Walz to help with assisting local police. Guard troops will be stationed at the shooting site and a federal building where officials have squared off with protestors daily since the Jan. 7 shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good.

Connecticut law makers have expressed their reactions in response to Saturday's shooting.

"Lethal vicious violence in Minnesota—heartbreaking & outrageous—directly reflects malign lawless leadership. Trump, Noem, all responsible for fostering a culture of illegal brutality, must be held accountable," Senator Richard Blumenthal expressed.

“ICE agents continue to act with impunity, refusing to exercise any restraint – leaving a trail of death and violence in their path. It needs to end now,” said Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01). "“It is beyond horrifying to watch a second resident shot and killed by agents in Minneapolis"

"“I am sick to my stomach at what appears to be another cold-blooded murder of an American citizen at the hands of ICE agents, and the immediate lies being spun in response by this administration," said Rep. Jim Himes (CT-04). "We are watching the relentless escalation of violence by a lawless authoritarian regime.

"The second fatal shooting by DHS agents in Minneapolis this month demands a thorough, professional homicide investigation by local and state authorities who are actually qualified to carry out that task," said Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02). "DHS leaders and agents have shown they are more interested in politically spinning the facts to escape accountability, which is one of many reasons why tensions in Minnesota and across the country are dangerously on edge.
