Ranking Member Larson’s Statement on President Trump’s Budget Proposal

May 23, 2017
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01), released the following statement on the Social Security cuts proposed in President Trump’s budget:

“President Trump promised time and time again to the American people that he would not cut Social Security. In today’s budget, he broke that promise.  The President’s budget calls for up to $64 billion in cuts to the Social Security benefits that Americans earned with every paycheck. And for what? To pay for his tax cuts for the wealthy.  This a broken promise to the millions of people who worked and paid their premiums into the system in the belief that these earned benefits would be there for them when they retired or found themselves unable to work due to a severe, long-term or permanent disability. The Social Security Disability Insurance program was a crowning achievement of President Dwight Eisenhower, who saw the conditions of veterans returning home from World War II. As Ranking Member, I will fight this disastrous budget proposal and any attempts  to weaken our nation’s support for its citizens.”
